Longitudinal Development of Psychomotor Skills

ETI Attempts Data

RSI PlotsUsing Rapid Sequence Induction and Intubation (RSII) as a model task, SimPORTAL investigates the development of psychomotor skills in healthcare providers as they progress through primary training. We apply methods for identifying and modeling volatility in time series to data from high-fidelity simulations, the BioGears human physiology engine, and patient care provided in the University's teaching hospitals. This enables us to more clearly evaluate the relationship of provider action to changes in a patient's physiology, and calculate performance scores for each patient contact. These scores are valid regardless of working environment (e.g. clinic, simulation laboratory), and may be compared individually or in ad hoc provider groups. To our knowledge, this is a novel description of psychomotor skill development.
